Petaluma Valley Athletic Club is now an authorized independent training center of STARFISH SWIM SCHOOL®, the nationally recognized curriculum for swim instruction created by Starfish Aquatics Institute®. Starfish Swim School curriculum is built around the concept that there is a shared “core” of aquatic skills that every person needs to know to be proficient in the water. The core competencies provide the foundation that will enable students to learn correct swimming stroke technique by building upon what they already know.

The five core competencies are specific and, for the most part, sequential. Benchmark water skills identify when the competency has been achieved and the student earns an award patch. Safety skills are also integrated fully into the curriculum. Each level contains skills that are safety and survival oriented with the goal of developing life-long habits in students that can be life-saving to themselves or others. For each benchmark water skill there is a corresponding safety skill that must be demonstrated before a student can earn their patch.

Overall, the STARFISH SWIM SCHOOL at Petaluma Valley Athletic Club emphasizes water safety and encourages skills development by providing effective awards of achievement as the junior swimmer advances their skills!


STARFISH SWIM SCHOOL - PRIVATE LESSONS

Incorporating the Starfish Swim School swim level categories as described below, our Private Lessons provide exclusive instruction directed towards the junior swimmer’s individual needs while also offering effective awards of achievement as the junior swimmer advances their skills!

StarBabies ( Ages 6-36 months )
This class provides an early introduction to swimming for ages 6 to 36 months directed towards improving the child’s comfort level in water while training parents in water safety and drowning prevention. One parent or guardian must be in the water with each child. Swim Diapers required.

Sea Animal Levels ( Ages 3 & up )
Grouped according to swim ability into different sea animal groups like White Turtles & Blue Dolphins, junior swimmers are provided opportunities to advance levels by meeting specific skill benchmarks. Swimmers are awarded colorful patches, highlighting each level of achievement, which are presented before the entire class and can be proudly displayed on each junior swimmer’s personal PVAC Swim Tote (provided to each junior swimmer on first day of class).

Starfish Stroke School
For the junior swimmer who has achieved the highest level color patch, “Green Shark”, or meets skills requirement, and is ready to refine and develop freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and/or butterfly strokes. Colorful rockers, patches highlighting each level of stroke achievement, are presented to swimmer before entire class and can be proudly displayed on PVAC Swim Tote.

Junior Swim Team is a non-competitive team that focuses on building swimming skills in a fun and enjoyable environment. Swimmers work on stroke technique, breathing, diving and flip turns. Games and relays spark great conditioning and fun for all.

Ages 7 & up.
